1. 1. The primary function of AVATARTM ceiling tiles is decorative,
and has nothing to do with soundproofing.
2. Many homes are constructed in an open style nowadays. Installing
a different application in a particular place, for example over
a dining room, creates a psychological division, which suggests
a difference between one room and another.
3. Installing AvatarTM tiles adds more than just a decorative touch:
it’s quick and easy! You can change your lighting scheme or
other mechanics without having to undertake major renovations at
exorbitant costs. Lengthy and expensive repairs to cracked gypsum
and roughcast are a thing of the past. Cover any unsightly mess
with style… using AvatarTM tiles.
4. An uneven ceiling is easy to fix with AvatarTM. Simply install
3” (76 mm) wide plywood laths laid 12” (305 mm) center
to center and lath center at 1-1/2” (38 mm). (Standard pine
laths are not recommended since they tend to warp while drying.)
Mount tiles to laths by nailing inside design grooves, and finish
with a Contour tile (without design). At the junction of ceiling
and wall, finish with moulding.
5. Cement Ceiling: Proceed as in # 4.
6. Cathedral Ceiling: For this type of ceiling,
an adjusted moulding is essential at the junction of both slopes.
This moulding should be adapted to the angle of each ceiling.
7. Suspended Ceiling: It is not possible to install
AvatarTM tiles in the existing framework of a suspended ceiling,
since the tiles are not compatible. However, the ceiling can be
installed beneath the structure in the following manner:
- Verify anchor points in the ceiling structure.
- Add supplementary anchor points in order to support a new ceiling
installation.
- Mount 3” (76 mm) plywood laths laid 12” (305 mm) center
to center and lath center at 1-1/2” (38 mm), perpendicularly
over the main crosspieces under the “T”-pieces of the
ceiling.
- Screw laths directly into metal crosspieces and install tiles
as directed in # 4.
n When necessary, install screwed-in tiles at corners for access
to plumbing and electricity.
8. Radiant Ceiling: It is not possible to install
decorative tiles over this type of ceiling, since nails may cause
damage to electric membrane.
9. Coffer Ceiling: We recommend mounting 1/2”
(13 mm) plywood on the ceiling before beginning to install coffers.
This allows work to proceed from an even base, making installation
much easier.
10. Wainscoting: It is possible to install tiles
as wainscoting along the bottom of walls. All necessary components
are available.
11. Tiles should be fastened with PL-700 construction glue (Bull
Dog Grip) and nailed with a pressure-nailer in grooves of tiles
on a slight angle and 2” (51 mm) nails are recommended. Conceal
nail holes with wood filler mixed with the same color finishing
paint as tiles.

- Apply
a primer on all sides (top, bottom & edges) of tiles to avoid
deformation.
- Apply two finishing coats with a medium-length (9 mm) brush roller.
Finish may also be done with a paint gun.
- It is preferable to finish tiles before installation to avoid
possible problems. Ceiling may also be finished after installation.
- Latex, alkyd, lacquer or other finishes may be applied directly
over the manufacturer’s primer.
- MDF and wood veneer tiles may be stained and/or varnished. Apply
stain with brush by fully coating the piece, then wipe off excess
along direction of grain with a soft, fiber-free cotton cloth.
- Allow stain to dry for about ten minutes.
- Apply a sealer over stain and cover tile completely, including
back and edges. Drying times will vary. Refer to manufacturer’s
instructions.
- After sealer is completely dry, lightly sand with grade 220 sandpaper.
- Follow up with 1 or 2 coats of your selected finishing varnish.
Lightly sand between coats.
